In the LION-RCT a personalized, supervised, live-remote exercise program is offered to cancer survivors. The program is personalized to target the symptom which is the most burdensome for the participant. The four side-effects that can be targeted in this study are:
- Fatigue
- Perceived low physical functioning in daily life
- Anxiety or depressive symptoms
- CIPN (Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy).
Furthermore, the program will be administered live-remotely from a central broadcast point per country, so all participants can train from their own respective homes. The aim of the study is to assess the (cost-) effectiveness of this program on quality of life and the participantsā main, self-reported side-effect.
The LION-RCT has two study groups: an exercise group (12 weeks) and a wait list control group. The exercise group can start with the exercise training sessions immediately after inclusion in the study; the wait-list control group will start after 12 weeks. The participants will have three supervised live-remote exercise training sessions per week. Two of these sessions are the same for all participants. The third session is tailored to the individual main side-effect. Next to the training sessions, participants will learn about the general effects of exercise for cancer patients and why exercise is important for specific side-effects.
Planning
We want to include 350 adult cancer survivors in our study. We have included the first participant in March 2024 and aim to finish the trial in 2026. If you would like to have more information about the trial, please send an email to lionstudie@umcutrecht.nl.
